Microsoft has laid off 4,800 employees, about 2.1% of its global workforce, as its new fiscal year begins, with Xbox and commercial sales taking the biggest hits. HR chief Amy Coleman told employees the business is changing because the industry around it is changing, insisting AI isn't replacing these roles. Xbox alone loses 1,600 jobs now, with 3,200 more planned this year as CEO Asha Sharma resets the gaming division.
